This 1857 wood engraving pairs a scene of gold mining at Gold Hill, North Carolina, with a "picnic" in which men and women dance in a barn, a combination that reflects how illustrators of the period framed the Piedmont mining town as both an industrial site and a rural community. Gold was first found in the Carolina Piedmont decades before the California rush of 1848, and Gold Hill grew into one of the region's best-known mining centers. Wood engravings like this one were the main way many readers saw distant places in the mid-nineteenth century, so the print offers a useful view of how the South was pictured for a national audience just before the Civil War.
