*Roscoe's Barn, Conn.* is an etching by Julian Alden Weir, a painter and printmaker who spent much of his working life in the Connecticut countryside. Weir's farm at Branchville drew him to rural subjects like this one, and he turned to such scenes often in the later 1800s. The record gives only a date of "18--," so the exact year is uncertain, but the plate's initials and its acquisition through the Pennell Fund make it a useful example of American etching from that period. Look at how the lines build the barn's walls and shadows with only black ink on paper.
