Few pictures on this board capture a single manhunt as directly as this one, which depicts the barn on Garrett's farm near Port Royal, Virginia, where John Wilkes Booth was cornered in late April 1865. Booth had shot President Lincoln at Ford's theater on April 14, and he hid in the tobacco barn with David Herold while Union cavalry surrounded the property. The soldiers set the barn afire, and Sergeant Boston Corbett shot Booth before he died on the farm's porch. The record gives no artist or date, so the print is best read as a later rendering of an event that drew intense public attention at the time.
