Few farm buildings in America carry as much history as the barn pictured here, which stood on the grounds of Mount Vernon, George Washington's Virginia estate on the Potomac. Washington ran a large working farm there with many outbuildings, so a view like this records a part of the estate that visitors of the period would have seen alongside the mansion. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its views of landmarks and scenery, made the picture on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative, and it is probably from the 1910s. The glass was broken and later taped to a second sheet, a reminder of how fragile these early plates could be.
