Keedysville, a village in Washington County, Maryland, was close enough to the fighting at Antietam that its barns and houses filled with wounded men after the battle in September 1862. This stereograph shows one of them, a Smith family barn that was turned into a hospital. Photographer David B. Woodbury worked in the area in the weeks after the battle, when the wounded were still being moved from the fields. The wet collodion glass negative records the arrangement of the building and the scene around it, a reminder of how quickly ordinary farm buildings became medical facilities.
