Pawnee Bill, the showman Gordon W. Lillie, is pictured with a ranch horse around 1908, when he was known for blending Wild West entertainment with ranch life in the Pawnee country of Oklahoma. The old caption card lists subjects including Pawnee people, sod houses, and dugout dwellings, which suggests the photographer wanted to record the rough early architecture of the region alongside the horse. The attribution to J.B. Hainey and the date come from that unverified card, so the image is best read as a period document of frontier Oklahoma.
