Despite its name, this 1920 photograph shows a steamboat rather than a horse: the stern-wheeler White Horse working through the Five Fingers, a set of rock pillars that split the Yukon River into narrow channels and made navigation a hard test for pilots. Stern-wheelers like this one carried freight and passengers along the river, and they remained important until the White Pass railway took over much of that trade. The print was made by the Hamacher studio in Whitehorse and later entered the Frank and Frances Carpenter collection at the Library of Congress, which received it as a gift in 1951.
