A pair of animals, a goat and a horse, share this sheet of sketches attributed to Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), the Edo-period painter and printmaker best known for *The Great Wave* and his *Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji*. The Library of Congress catalog record notes that the attribution rests on old caption-card data and has not been verified, so the sheet should be read as a traditional attribution rather than a confirmed work. Hokusai filled many notebooks with quick studies of animals, people, and everyday scenes, and loose drawings like these show how he observed living creatures before turning them into finished compositions. The sheet came to the library through the Crosby Stuart Noyes Collection.
