A lone vaquero and his horse on the Lakeside Ranch set this view apart from Carleton Watkins's better-known Sierra and Yosemite landscapes. Watkins was one of the most respected photographers of the American West, and his 1880s work recorded California's land and the enterprises that were settling it, including this Kern County scene of the working side of ranch country in the San Joaquin Valley. Vaqueros, the horsemen whose skills came from Spanish and Mexican ranching traditions, were central to cattle and horse work on ranches like this one. The details come from an old caption card and have not been fully verified, so the exact location and circumstances are worth reading with that caveat in mind.
