Dated December 15, 1923, this glass negative shows Herbert Hoover, whom the gallery links to the picture, during his years as Secretary of Commerce under Presidents Harding and Coolidge. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded the capital's officials and events in the early twentieth century, made the image, though the title on the negative sleeve is unverified. Glass plates like this one were a standard medium of studio and press photography of the period, and the streaks and blemishes on this example are typical of coatings that have deteriorated over time.
