Thomas Street in Dublin is where Robert Emmet, the young Irish nationalist who led a failed uprising in July 1803, was hanged and then beheaded on 20 September 1803. This color lithograph, issued in Buffalo, New York, by Gies & Co. around 1878, shows the scene of his death in the street, with a crowd of spectators gathered around. Its caption quotes Emmet's words from his speech from the dock, "When my country takes her place among the nations of the earth, then and not till then let my epitaph be written," which made him a lasting symbol of Irish independence in the nineteenth century.
