Robert Emmet, the young Dublin-born republican who led a failed rising against British rule in Ireland in 1803, is the figure this lithograph celebrates under the title "The Irish Patriot." Published in Boston around 1872 by the firm of Haskell & Allen, the print reflects how Irish-American audiences of the later nineteenth century kept Emmet's memory alive. He was executed at age 25 after the uprising in Dublin collapsed, and his speech from the dock became one of the most quoted pieces of Irish nationalist rhetoric. Portraits like this one, sold as affordable prints, helped turn him into a symbol of sacrifice for Irish independence.
