Three Fenian men hanged in Manchester, England, in November 1867 are the focus of this lithograph, which the record ties to the "Manchester Martyrs." They were executed for the death of a police sergeant during an attempt to free prisoners. Shamrocks around the group mark the subject as Irish, and the New York imprint shows how strongly the case resonated with Irish communities in America. Lucian Gray's print, issued around 1869, belongs to a wave of Irish-American imagery that cast the executed men as emblems of national sacrifice.
