John Redmond, leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party, is the figure this 1916 appeal centers on, and its message was aimed squarely at the people of Ireland. Redmond had pressed for Home Rule and backed Britain's war effort in 1914, urging Irish men to enlist in the British Army and calling the conflict a fight for small nations. By 1916, that position had grown deeply divisive, especially after the Easter Rising in Dublin, and the appeal reflects the strain between constitutional nationalism and a rising tide of separatist feeling. It is a useful document for seeing how the war was argued on the home front in Ireland.
