Go over the top" was British trench slang for climbing out of a trench to attack, and this 1917 color lithograph by John A. Coughlin uses the phrase to recruit for the U.S. Marine Corps. Its subjects include a mortar, a short-barreled weapon that lobbed explosives into enemy trenches, which signals the close-quarters fighting Americans prepared for after the United States entered the war in April 1917. The text along the bottom is unusual, since it includes a British Red Cross appeal asking the public to give on a specific day in October. That mix reflects how Allied charities and recruiting campaigns often shared printed space during the war.
