Coughlin's poster makes a claim in its title, "First in France," and its lower text lists the Army branches and the numbered divisions, First through Seventh, that the Marines would be recruited alongside. Posters like this were produced in 1917, after the United States entered the war in April, when the government needed large numbers of volunteers quickly. The Marine Corps leaned on its reputation for readiness, and its later fighting at Belleau Wood in June 1918 gave that boast added weight. The poster's mortar subject reflects the era's emphasis on modern artillery and specialized equipment.
