Its French title, *Premiers au feu*, which the record renders as "first to fight," sets this color lithograph apart from the many recruiting posters of its moment. Signed by Andrée Ménard and dated 1917, it was made in the months after the United States entered the First World War in April, when the Marine Corps was working to expand its ranks. The poster pairs a helmet with bold color to draw the eye and tie service in the corps to the fighting in France.
