Unlike the illustrated recruiting posters of the period, this one is set entirely in type, and its wording does the persuading. Its title, "The crisis," and its address to "free men" appealed to men to enlist voluntarily rather than wait to be called up. Printed in London in 1915 by David Allen & Sons of Harrow, one of Britain's major poster printers, it was issued by the Joint Labor Recruiting Committee. Britain did not introduce conscription until early 1916, so in 1915 recruitment depended on appeals like this one, aimed at workers and at men who had not yet joined up.
