Few things in this set are as plainly stated as the slogan "Be ready! Join now," a silhouette-style recruiting poster issued by the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee in 1915, when Britain was relying on voluntary enlistment to fill its army. Its dark, flat figures suited the posters' purpose, since they could be read quickly from a hoarding or station wall. David Allen & Sons, the Harrow firm named on the sheet, was one of the major printers of Britain's wartime posters.
