Come lad, slip across and help" speaks to its viewer in the easy, neighborly voice of a friend rather than the stern or heroic tone of many recruiting posters. Issued in London in 1915, when Britain still relied on voluntary enlistment, it was one of a numbered series produced by the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee, a government-backed body that commissioned posters for public display. The lithograph was printed by David Allen & Sons in Harrow, a firm that produced much of the wartime poster output, and its two-sheet format made it large enough to be read from across a street.
