Little remains of the church of São Paulo in Macao beyond its great stone facade, which stands above a long stone staircase on the hillside. Built by Jesuit priests in the early seventeenth century, the church was largely destroyed by fire in 1835, and the facade was left standing as a free-standing screen. This stereograph, published by C.H. Graves of Philadelphia around 1904, presents the ruins as a travel subject during the years when Macao, a Portuguese enclave on the Chinese coast, drew curious visitors from abroad.
