The U.S. Marine Band, the nation's oldest professional musical group and the official band of the President, is the subject here, shown posed on the steps of the U.S. Capitol in Washington. The National Photo Company made this glass negative sometime between 1910 and 1926, a period when the company documented the capital's streets, monuments and public life for postcards and commercial sale. Band photographs like this one were popular with visitors and were often reproduced as souvenirs. The glass plate has the streaks and surface wear typical of aging coatings, a reminder of how fragile these early negatives are.
