The Apotheosis of Washington is the fresco that Constantino Brumidi painted in the canopy of the United States Capitol rotunda, and this glass negative records that painted ceiling rather than a view of the building's exterior or the city below it. Brumidi, an Italian-born artist who spent decades decorating the Capitol, worked on the piece in the 1860s, and it shows George Washington rising toward heaven surrounded by allegorical figures and classical gods. The record credits the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the city's buildings and monuments in the early twentieth century, and notes that the glass has suffered some natural deterioration in its coating, so faint streaks may appear across the image.
