Few paintings in the Capitol are as recognizable as the canvas of Columbus coming ashore, which hangs in the Rotunda among the large historical scenes. John Vanderlyn completed it in 1847 to show the explorer's arrival in the Americas in 1492, a subject meant to tie the young nation to a much older story. This glass negative came from the National Photo Company, a commercial firm that photographed Washington's buildings and monuments in the early twentieth century, and it records the painting as visitors of that era would have seen it.
