This glass negative records John Gadsby Chapman's *The Baptism of Pocahontas*, one of the large history paintings hung in the Capitol Rotunda. Chapman completed the canvas in 1840, and it shows the 1613 baptism of Pocahontas at Jamestown, a scene meant to celebrate the colony's early days. The National Photo Company made the plate in the early twentieth century, when it photographed Washington's landmarks for sale to visitors. Its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the aging of the glass coating, which gives the image a worn, documentary quality.
