Rather than a view of the building itself, this glass negative records a painting inside the Capitol: Robert W. Weir's *Embarkation of the Pilgrims at Delft-Haven*. Weir finished the canvas for the Rotunda in the early 1840s, as part of a series of large historical scenes meant to present the nation's origins in paint. It shows the Leiden congregation leaving the Dutch port in 1620, on the voyage that would lead to Plymouth. The National Photo Company, whose glass-plate negatives document Washington's landmarks in the early twentieth century, made the record.
