Here the Erie Railroad runs through the Wyoming Valley of northeastern Pennsylvania, placing a working rail line in the middle of the autumn countryside. The valley, shaped by the Susquehanna River, was known for its farmland and, later, its coal, and by the late 1800s the railroads that crossed it carried both to distant markets. Autumn views like this were popular in that period, often presenting harvest-time fields and rural life as emblems of national prosperity. Notice how the tracks and the fallen-leaf landscape share the same frame, suggesting how closely the era's farming and industry were tied together.
