*Autumn in Catskills* by Andrew Melrose takes its subject from the Catskill Mountains of southeastern New York, a range that American landscape painters returned to often in the nineteenth century. The mountains had been made famous largely by the Hudson River School, whose artists treated wilderness as a subject of national pride. Melrose's treatment of the season speaks to that tradition, and set beside the harvest scenes on this board, it reminds viewers that autumn was once read as a time of plenty as well as of change.
