Dated November 4, 1934, this gelatin silver print shows the writer Gertrude Stein, photographed by Carl Van Vechten, a novelist and critic who was also a champion of modern writers. Stein had lived in Paris for decades, where her salon drew painters and writers, and her 1933 memoir, *The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas*, became a surprise bestseller in the United States. That success helped make her the subject of wide curiosity when she returned for a lecture tour of America in 1934 and 1935. Van Vechten photographed many of the period's best-known figures, and his portraits of Stein are among the most recognizable images of her.
