Taken on November 11, 1933, this gelatin silver print shows the novelist Julien Green, who was born in Paris to American parents and wrote mostly in French. Carl Van Vechten photographed many writers, musicians, and performers during the 1930s, and this portrait belongs to his celebrity series at the Library of Congress, which came to the library through his estate in 1966. Green's mixed American and French background placed him in an unusual position between the two literary traditions, and he was later elected to the Académie française.
