Simon Greenleaf appears here in a bust-length view that shows the legal scholar in the plain dress of a mid-nineteenth-century New England professor. Greenleaf taught at Harvard Law School, where he held a chair and later served as dean, and his multivolume *Treatise on the Law of Evidence* became a standard reference for American lawyers and courts. The caption card records no date, but since Greenleaf died in 1853, the photograph was most likely made during his lifetime. Its subject spent much of his career shaping how courts weighed testimony and documents.
