Carl Van Vechten made this portrait of Franz Werfel on December 14, 1940, only months after the Austrian-born writer had escaped occupied France and reached the United States. Werfel, a leading voice of German-language literature whose novel *The Forty Days of Musa Dagh* had been a sensation in the 1930s, was then starting a new life in exile in California and New York. Van Vechten, a novelist and tireless chronicler of writers, musicians and performers, photographed hundreds of such figures, and his sittings capture the literary circles of the period.
