This gelatin silver print, made on December 3, 1932, shows James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938), the writer, lawyer, diplomat and longtime leader of the NAACP. Carl Van Vechten, a novelist and photographer who was a patron of the Harlem Renaissance, took the portrait, and it belongs to his large series of celebrity sittings at the Library of Congress. Johnson's best-known work, the song "Lift Every Voice and Sing," was written with his brother John Rosamond Johnson, and his anthology of Black American poetry helped shape the period's literary canon.
