Dated May 20, 1933, this gelatin silver print shows Henri Matisse, the French painter whose bold color and simplified line made him a leading figure of modern art. Carl Van Vechten, a writer and photographer who turned his camera on many painters, musicians, and writers of the period, made the portrait. The print is catalogued in his celebrity series, which the Library of Congress received from the Van Vechten estate in 1966. Matisse was in his sixties when the picture was taken, and portraits like this one from the 1930s help show how artists of his generation were presented to the public.
