The town hall in Louvain, now Leuven, rises over the Grote Markt as one of the finest late Gothic civic buildings in the Low Countries, its facade crowded with tiers of pointed niches and statues. Construction began in the mid-15th century, when prosperous cloth-trade guilds and city magistrates wanted a building that proclaimed the town's wealth and independence. The caption card gives no date for this print, and the photographer is recorded only as "ND," so its exact age and maker remain unconfirmed. Even so, the view shows the building as a monument of civic pride, with the market square and its surrounding houses in the frame.
