Taken from the riverbank, this overall view shows the Hôtel de Ville as seen from the quai along the Seine, with a bridge included in the scene. It is plate 60 in a book of sixty heliogravure plates documenting the building's reconstruction, published in Paris in 1884. The original town hall was badly damaged by fire during the Paris Commune in 1871, and the architects Théodore Ballu and Deperthes rebuilt it in the early 1880s. The photographer, E. Baldus, is best known for his architectural and landscape work, and the photogravure process reproduced the fine detail of his original photographs.
