The Hôtel de Ville stands on the Place de l'Hôtel-de-Ville on the Right Bank, serving as the seat of Paris's city government. The building that appears here is the rebuilt version: fire destroyed the earlier structure during the Paris Commune in 1871, and it was reconstructed between about 1873 and 1882 in a French Renaissance style. This print uses the photochrom process, a color method that combined photographs with multiple lithographic stones, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold such prints in the United States around 1900. Its soft, saturated tones show how the company marketed European cityscapes to American travelers and armchair tourists.
