Despite its place on a board of taverns and saloons, this engraving shows a Paris townhouse. In eighteenth-century French usage, an *hôtel* was a grand private residence, not a place to lodge travelers. The sheet presents the front and rear elevations of the Hotel Desmarests as plate 381 in a survey of French architecture by Blondel. The caption card dates the print to about 1800, but that date is unverified. Blondel's volumes were largely issued in the mid-eighteenth century, so the print may record an older building or reflect a later printing.
