The Hotel Frederic in New Iberia, a town on Bayou Teche in south Louisiana's sugar country, is the subject here, and the photograph dates to about 1920. Small-town hotels of that period were often the busiest buildings on their main streets, serving traveling salesmen, planters and railroad men, and their lobbies and street fronts reflected the commerce of the surrounding parish. The Wittemann Collection at the Library of Congress preserves many such views of American towns, giving a record of how regional hotels looked in the years after World War I. The date and details come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
