We-Ton is the named sitter in this c1900 portrait by Edward S. Curtis, one of the Library of Congress's Curtis Collection prints, catalogued under the subject of Native American clothing and dress. Curtis spent much of his career from the 1890s into the 1920s photographing Indigenous people across the western United States and Canada for his multivolume work *The North American Indian*, which was published between 1907 and 1930. His portraits often emphasized traditional garments, ornaments and hairstyles, and he sometimes arranged or adjusted costume and setting to suit his vision of an older way of life. The image is worth viewing with that purpose in mind, as both a record of dress at the time and a product of Curtis's own choices about how to present his subjects.
