Identified in its record as Ben Long Ear, this c1905 portrait is catalogued with its clothing and jewelry as the main subjects. It comes from Edward S. Curtis's work documenting Native peoples, which he gathered into the multi-volume *The North American Indian*, first published in 1907. Curtis often posed sitters in traditional dress and ornament because he hoped to preserve a record of material culture he believed was disappearing. Today, viewers tend to notice how carefully the garments and jewelry were chosen and arranged for the camera.
