Thomas Circle, where 14th Street meets Massachusetts and Vermont avenues in Northwest Washington, was a busy junction well before automobiles became common, and this negative records its traffic around 1920. The circle takes its name from Union Army general George H. Thomas, whose bronze statue has stood at its center since 1879. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that photographed the capital's streets and monuments for sale in the early twentieth century, made the picture. The record gives the date only as an estimate based on neighboring negatives in the same range, and the glass plate shows streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coating.
