Few studio portraits from the postwar years show two former Confederate commanders together, and this one pairs Robert E. Lee with Joseph E. Johnston, credited to D.J. Ryan of Savannah, Georgia. The mount carries the line "By special permission," which suggests the portrait was released with someone's approval. The date is an estimate, [1870], the year Lee died. Both men had surrendered their armies in April 1865, Lee at Appomattox and Johnston in North Carolina, so the picture captures two wartime rivals recast as public figures of reconciliation.
