Titled *Sherman at Savannah, Ga.*, this print ties its subject to the close of Gen. William T. Sherman's march from Atlanta to the sea in December 1864. Confederate forces evacuated Savannah rather than defend it, and Union troops entered the city soon after. Sherman then wired President Lincoln offering Savannah to him as a Christmas present, a message that made the occupation one of the war's best-known episodes in Georgia. The record gives no date, and the firm Major & Knapp is listed as an associated name, though that attribution has not been confirmed.
