Few subjects from the early twentieth century show a city's civic life as clearly as a firemen's parade, when volunteer and professional companies marched in their dress uniforms, often pulling polished apparatus through the streets. This example comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, a large body of glass negatives made by the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied pictures to newspapers from about 1900 to the 1910s. The record gives no date or location, and the title rests on unverified caption information, so the exact parade remains uncertain. Still, the glass plate format and the Bain archive's typical content place it within a period when such processions drew large crowds and were widely photographed.
