Firemen gather around an automobile engine in this glass negative, a scene that shows the fire service examining motor vehicles at a time when many departments were still learning to maintain and repair them. The image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Bain's news service supplied pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century, when municipal fire departments were replacing horses with motorized apparatus. The title is taken from information written on the negative or caption card by the news service and has not been independently verified, so the exact location and date remain uncertain.
