This color lithograph advertises Frederick Bancroft, billed as the "Prince of Magicians," and its boastful title is typical of the touring stage shows of the 1890s, when traveling performers relied on large posters to draw crowds to town. The Strobridge Lithographing Company, based in Cincinnati with an office in New York, was one of the leading American poster printers of the period and produced theatrical and circus bills in bold, saturated colors. Posters like this one were meant to be read from a distance on fences, walls and storefronts, so their oversized lettering and dramatic imagery were as important as any claim about the performer.
