Billed as "Prince of Magicians," Frederick Bancroft is presented in this color lithograph as a stage performer whose name and title were meant to carry the poster. The Strobridge Lithographing Company, which printed from Cincinnati and New York and was among the busiest American makers of theatrical and show posters in the 1890s, produced it around 1895. Such posters were pasted on walls and billboards to draw audiences to touring magic shows, which were a popular form of evening entertainment at the time. The copyright notice in the record shows the company registered the design, a step that protected its artwork from being copied.
