This silkscreen poster announces an amateur magic contest held at Roosevelt Playground, and its subject line places the event in New York State during the 1930s. Its back bears a September 12, 1936 date stamp, and it was produced under the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration. During the Depression, the WPA paid artists to design posters that advertised free public events such as concerts, lectures, and neighborhood recreation programs. Silkscreen was a fairly new process for commercial-style posters, and the Federal Art Project's workshops used it to make bright, flat designs that could be printed cheaply in quantity.
