Eugene Laurant, who lived from 1875 to 1944, appears here as a magician and illusionist, and the subject headings pair him with jinns, the spirits of Arabian folklore, which tells you the act leaned on exotic enchantment as much as on sleight of hand. The lithograph dates to about 1913, a period when vaudeville and touring theaters drew large audiences to live magic. It was printed in Chicago by the W.M. King Service, a firm that produced colorful advertising sheets for performers, and its bold color was designed to catch the eye from across a street. The poster is a useful window into how stage magicians of the era marketed themselves.
